Cannabis entrepreneurs Isadore Day, of the Ojibway tribe from Serpent River First Nation, and Thomas Lahache, a member of the Mohawk from the Kahnawake Nation, have joined forces to re-launch Red Market Brand. This partnership aims to not only revitalize the brand, but also to honor and uphold an ancient treaty relationship of coexistence and economic collaboration, known as the Dish with One Spoon. This covenant was acknowledged in the Great Peace of Montreal Treaty in August 1701.

The decision to re-launch Red Market Brand came from their shared concern about the underrepresentation of Indigenous cannabis advocates in Canada’s mainstream cannabis market. This issue has persisted since the enactment of the Cannabis Act in 2019. Both entrepreneurs agree on the need for a shift in Canadian laws to fully acknowledge and allow the Indigenous nations to partake in the success of the country’s cannabis industry.

The long-standing tradition of the Dish with One Spoon treaty has served as a robust foundation for the collaboration between Red Market Brand and Lahache’s company, 907 Canada Inc. This partnership is designed to increase Indigenous participation in the cannabis industry and contribute towards the rectification of the existing disparities.

The essence of their alliance lies in the principles of the Dish with One Spoon treaty, an ancient agreement between the Ojibway and Mohawk tribes that was established before settler contact. The treaty’s core values centered on the peaceful sharing of land and resources, emphasizing the importance of maintaining peace for the coexistence of these two distinct nations and their peoples.
